Botox and Dermal Fillers are Not The Same! Let Us Understand The Difference!

More often than not, people get confused between two techniques used for the liquid facelift – Botox and dermal fillers.

As we understand, a liquid facelift is the procedure used for facial rejuvenation and is based on injecting liquid substances in the skin to remove fine lines, wrinkles, ageing effects and tiredness of the face.

A liquid facelift is based on two liquid inject-able substances – Botox and dermal fillers and both have different functions to perform.  We are going to talk about both in details to understand the difference and make a more informed decision for the liquid facelift.

Both the procedures offer facial rejuvenation with the help of external volume that can be injected into the skin, but both work at different levels and render different results.

Dermal Fillers, as the name suggests, are filling liquids that are injected in the derma (skin) to make it look fuller and regain supple form. With age, skin tends to lose its elasticity and takes a saggy, rubbery form, losing all the suppleness. Dermal fillers help to regain this. Most of the FDA approved fillers, such as JUVEDERM®, Radiesse®, Restylane® &Perlane® are made of natural substances produced by the body. With their special rejuvenating features, dermal fillers work perfectly to blossom up specific areas of the face. They work on the inner layers of the skin to stimulate the skin cells so that they can start reproducing natural collagen (substance responsible for the elasticity and suppleness of the skin). As the collagen is reproduced, the hollow areas under the skin get replenished and wrinkles start to disappear.  This lifts the facial features and face appears to be fuller and younger. Dermal fillers can be used for entire face or for specific concern areas such as cheeks, forehead, brow-lines, under-eye bags, jowls, and nose creases.

Now, Botox works to perform a completely different function

Botox is a potent protein which is used as a medicine for muscle disorders and is also used as a cosmetic remedy. It is extracted from a neurotoxin called Botulinum toxin and gained huge popularity lately. The most important feature or medical use of Botox is that it prevents the muscles from contracting. This feature is effectively used for facial rejuvenation. When injected under the skin in specific areas, it controls the muscle contraction in that particular area and stops the formation of further wrinkles on the face. It also makes previous wrinkles to relax and soften. Botox must be injected in the particular area to be rejuvenated and that too in a very small concentration because it prevents the nerve cell signals from reaching the muscles and they stop the contracting activity. It majorly works on forehead lines, crow’s feet & smile lines.

A perfect facial rejuvenation is a combination of Botox and Dermal Fillers both. While Botox controls the muscles and helps them to relax preventing further wrinkles, dermal fillers help the skin to reproduce collagen replenishing the natural nutrients required by it for the results to stay for longer.
